I have decided that the best way for me to use social media in my ecommerce world is to reach out to the critics. i manage 40 different online stores with 40 different sets of online inventory. Shoppers are are funneled my way en route from our partner websites. once there, my visitors turn into a pretty specific focus group. A group of potential customers browsing a single concept, selection of products. So the opportunity is to harness this resource for product development. The product in my case, at this moment is the web store itself. i need to find a good mechanism with which to query, survey, or more important to listen to this group. I am going to try different things on different stores to see what works. A guest book on one, a survey on the next and may a mini blog on another..."What do you think of the site?". good or bad, hopefully they will be talking. Class 2 and 3

I am still trying to figure out on how to work Social Media into what i do here at work. As i said our company is a 3rd party retailer. We outsource to other companies. To take it one more step removed, i run the ecommerce business for each one of our locations. Currently i work "Inside out" through our partners to their members and general database. I do not have direct contact with my online customers.

So, I have been back to Tim Jackson's blog for inspiration tp://masiguy.blogspot.com/ and decided that the means to my end...more sales...will be different than Tim's. As he has been doing this for 5 years for his company i guess i don't really know what his means were when he started but for me i am going to focus first on immediate feedback for product development. I will use an approach more akin to Mini's. ie using my existing customers to spread the word and also make a better product. The product being my individual web stores. Instead of going through my partners to get to the public, i will talk to the individuals that only i know...the people who visit my stores...is that a duh or what?

Class 1 was a bit of an eye opener for me. my company told me to go take some classes to help out with my ecommerce business. i wanted to take Web Market Strategies but was too late to get in. This was available so i signed up with the idea that anything i can learn about marketing in new media would definitely hep my cause. I was right, i am fascinated by this topic and have been racking my brain trying to think of how i can use this media to promote online sales. Looking at the data from "Groundswell" and class 1 it is obvious that there are people out there talking and listening, my problem is that my company is a 3rd party. Our brand is our partners brand. So far i have been connecting my customers through our partners.

I think i need to redefine my goal. There is too much going on to break everything down every week. Instead, i am just going to comment on the material as i see it. A mini summery of my favorite information. Or i can just keep commenting about what i am going to comment about!

I have created this blog to organize my class notes and thoughts. I will be required to look back into my notes and the presentation materials to summerize the facts, resouces and tools that i see usefull in acheiving the goals i have created for myself at work. Plus, i will need to take better notes! :) My favorite tool from class one...The Common Craft Show!
